Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews makes his case to be Argos QB
If the CFL was on the field right now, one of the biggest talking points of training camp would be the quarterback battle in Toronto.
That competition would be between newly acquired Matt Nichols and incumbent McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Thanks to COVID-19, a new name might have entered that mix.
The Maple Leafs are one of the NHL teams quarantined in Toronto as they prepare for an opening round match up with the Columbus Blue Jackets. A few of the players took to BMO Field to have some recreational fun on Thursday by tossing around the pigskin. Leaf star Auston Matthews showed off his arm talent and it caught the Argos’ eyes on Twitter.
So do we have a new quarterback prospect in Toronto? Well, Matthews has a solid frame at six-foot-three and 220-pounds. On an easy throw, he does show some good rotation and follow through with good ball placement. The spiral leaves something to be desired but no doubt that could improve with some better footwork. Best of all, you know he’s athletic.
All kidding aside, Nichols and Bethel-Thompson can rest easy knowing Matthews is focused on a Stanley Cup, while the CFL still has no word on how or when a season will take place. The Arizona native is a respectable passer but wouldn’t be up to snuff in a CFL QB room.
Connor McDavid as an Edmonton receiver, however? That’s something I’d pay to see.
