Redblacks pull receiver R.J. Harris in for another season

Less than a week before the opening of CFL free agency, the Redblacks have reduced their need for receivers by one.

Their top pass catcher from last season, meanwhile, remains without a contract.

Ottawa announced Wednesday the re-signing of R.J. Harris — the team’s second-leading receiver yardage-wise in 2019 — to a one-year deal.

The 27-year old Harris has spent the last two seasons with the Redblacks and, in 2019 made slight improvements on his rookie numbers by hauling in 62 passes for 774 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games. In his first year, the 6-foot, 195-pound former University of New Hampshire Wildcats star played 16 games, catching 49 balls for 697 yards and a pair of scores.

The Redblacks now have 19 receivers on their active list, with the free agent period opening Feb. 11 at 12 p.m.

They also have four more among the 15 players currently headed to the open market, including Dominique Rhymes, who led Ottawa last season with 1,056 yards and five touchdowns on 65 catches.

Currently slated to be among the top receivers available next week are Shaquelle Evans, who had 72 catches for 1,334 yards and five touchdowns with Saskatchewan last season, and Derel Walker, who caught 65 passes for 1,040 yards and six TDs in just 15 games with the Argos.
