Argos sign quarterback Bethel-Thompson to one-year extension

The Argonauts will have some valuable familiarity under centre in 2020.

The team announced on Tuesday they have signed quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson to a one-year extension.

The 31-year-old’s play was one of the few positives as the Argos finished 4-14 last season. Bethel-Thompson led the Canadian Football League with 26 touchdown passes in 16 games and was third in passing yards with 4,024.

Bethel-Thompson said he is looking forward to learning under new Argos head coach Ryan Dinwiddie, a former CFL quarterback.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am for this 2020 campaign and what we’re building here,” Bethel-Thompson said in a statement. “(Dinwiddie) played the position, he sees the field like a quarterback. I have high expectations for myself and I think he does as well.”

In nine of his games last season, Bethel-Thompson passed for at least 300 yards, and in 10 games, he threw at least two touchdown passes. Twice, Bethel-Thompson passed for more than 400 yards.

“We’re thrilled to have him back,” Dinwiddie said. “Athletically, he has an arm that can make all the throws and he moves around in the pocket well, but the No. 1 thing I love is his work ethic. Nobody works harder than McLeod does.”
