Calgary Stampeders face lengthy road trip early in 2020 CFL schedule
Fans may not be overly enthused about the Calgary Stampeders schedule for their 75th season in the Canadian Football League.
Especially avid McMahon Stadium tailgaters.
For four straight weeks in the summer, the team takes to the road, rolling into Winnipeg, Toronto, Hamilton and Montreal from June 26 through July 17.
Regardless, the Stampeders get back up on that horse for the 2020 CFL season against the visiting Montreal Alouettes on Friday, June 12, at McMahon Stadium.
It’s their opening game of a journey they hope takes them to Regina for the 108th Grey Cup on Sunday, Nov. 22.
The Stampeders, who made an early exit by losing the West Division semifinal to the eventual Grey Cup-champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers, hope to improve on their 12-6 second-place record during the 18-game regular-season schedule of the 2020 campaign.
A second-straight home game is slated against the BC Lions on Thursday, June 18.
Their first road tilt comes in Week 3 of the year against the defending Grey Cup champs in Winnipeg on Friday, June 26. That game vs. the Bombers marks the first of four straight matches in as many weeks away from home — the others all against East Division competition.
It’s quite the quirk in the schedule.
The annual Labour Day Classic at McMahon against the rival Edmonton Eskimos goes Monday, Sept. 7, at 2:30 p.m., with the Labour Day Replay scheduled for the Alberta capital five days later on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m. Those games mark the only two meetings against the Eskimos.
They also only play the rival Saskatchewan Roughriders twice on the year — and not until late in the season with games at Mosaic Stadium on Friday, Sept. 18, and in the season-finale at McMahon on Friday, Oct. 30.
The Stamps take on both the Lions and the Bombers three times during the campaign, including making two visits to the West Coast.
Bye-weeks come for the Stamps in Weeks 8, 12 and 17.
The Stamps will get help putting together their roster with two pre-season contests — on Saturday, May 30, against the visiting Roughriders at McMahon, and on Friday, June 5, vs. the host Lions.
