Expect significant changes for Ottawa Redblacks through free agency
It looks like there could be significant roster moves for the Ottawa Redblacks ahead of the 2020 Canadian Football League season.
And, given the team’s 3-15 record in 2019, that might not be a bad thing.
While CFL free agency doesn’t begin until Feb. 11 at noon, several players from Ottawa’s 2019 roster are unsigned. And while the team will try to retain a few of them, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Redblacks dip heavily into the free-agent market to fill some big holes. The biggest needs: Quarterback, defensive line and receiver.
Among the Redblacks’ potential free agents: LB Avery Williams, Kevin Brown and Anthony Cioffi, OL Nolan MacMillan, DB Sherrod Baltimore, Jonathan Rose, Randall Evans and Justin Howell, DL Danny Mason, J.R. Tavai, Mike Wakefield, Avery Ellis and Ettore Lattanzio, WR Nate Behar, R.J. Harris and Dominique Rhymes, QB Jonathon Jennings, RB Mossis Madu, K Lewis Ward, P Richie Leone and LS Louis-Philippe Bourassa.
Chances are some of the elite players are signed to contracts long before Feb. 11, but there will still be some very good ones to choose from.
Among the guys who could interest the Redblacks if they hit free agency: From the Edmonton Eskimos, there’s LB Larry Dean. From the Calgary Stampeders, there’s QB Nick Arbuckle, WR Reggie Begelton and Juwan Brescacin, and OL Derek Dennis. From Saskatchewan, there’s WR Shaq Evans, DL Micah Johnson (who they took a strong run at before the 2019 season — it’s believed they offered more than $200,000) and LB Cameron Judge. From Winnipeg, there’s OL Stanley Bryant, DL Willie Jefferson, QB Chris Streveler and WR Drew Wolitarsky. From Hamilton, there’s WR Bralon Addison, former Carleton Ravens DB Tunde Adeleke, DL Ja’Gared Davis, Julian Howsare, Dylan Wynn and Ted Laurent, OL Ryker Mathews and QB Jeremiah Masoli. From Toronto, there’s OL Tyler Holmes and WR Derel Walker.
