Chair of Bombers' board first woman with name on Grey Cup

Not only did the Winnipeg Blue Bombers end the longest current championship drought in the CFL with their Grey Cup victory on Sunday. They also helped make history in the process.

Chair of the team’s Board of Directors Dayna Spiring is now set to become the first woman to have her name engraved on the Grey Cup.

“I’m incredibly flattered, it’s still totally surreal to me,” said Spiring, moments after the Bombers celebrated their Grey Cup victory with their fans at The Forks. “I look at the way the world is changing. I’m the first woman to ever chair the Bombers and only the second female chair in the CFL. Now there’s a third in Edmonton.

“The firsts are important because it is one down and there’s lots more to go. But I’m honoured to be on the Grey Cup and honoured to represent the board of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. We have an incredible group of people – men and women – who love this team and love this city and want to do what they can for this organization.”

President and CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg, Spiring has been chair since January.

“I’m going to be chair for a couple more years so maybe we can go three for three,” joked Spiring, who joined the board in 2015.

“It’s an honour to have Dayna make history as the first woman to add her name to the Grey Cup,” said CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie in an email. “Her leadership and vision have been instrumental in guiding Winnipeg to this championship. We look forward to many more women being inspired by her example and following in her footsteps to become Grey Cup champions.”

“Dayna has been a leader in our community for many years so to see that she is going to have her name on the Grey Cup, first female name, is historic,” added Mayor Brian Bowman on Monday. “It’s something I’m really happy for her and I know there are a lot of people in our community who are really proud of her. It’s well earned.”
