SIX STAMPS NAMED WEST DIVISION ALL-STARS
Six members of the Calgary Stampeders have been voted to the Canadian Football League’s 2019 West Division all-star team.
REC Reggie Begelton
REC Eric Rogers
OT Derek Dennis
OG Shane Bergman
CB Tre Roberson
HB DaShaun Amos
This is the third time Dennis been recognized as division all-stars while Rogers has now been honoured twice. Begelton, Bergman, Roberson and Amos are all first-time selections.
The division all-stars are determined by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) as well as one ballot from each team’s coaching staff.
Here is a closer look at the Stampeders’ division all-stars:
Reggie Begelton (receiver): Begelton earned the Stamps’ nomination for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award after becoming just the fifth player in franchise history to record at least 100 catches in a season. He finished the regular season second in the league with 102 receptions and third in both receiving yards (1,444) and receiving touchdowns (10). Begelton also had four carries for 38 yards and one score. He had at least three catches in all 17 games he played and had five 100-yard games as well as three other contests in which he amassed at least 90 receiving yards. Begelton was twice honoured as a CFL player of the week including for an Aug. 17 game against Montreal in which he recorded eight catches for 173 yards and four touchdowns.
Eric Rogers (receiver): Rogers, who was a division and league all-star in 2015 during his first stint with the Stamps, reached the 1,000-yard milestone in receiving for the second time in his career. In 17 games, Rogers caught 85 passes for 1,080 yards and 10 touchdowns. He had three 100-yard games and was twice honoured as a CFL player of the week including for a Week 3 performance against BC in which he had nine catches for 100 yards and three touchdowns.
Derek Dennis (offensive tackle) and Shane Bergman (offensive guard): Two members of the offensive line earned all-star honours, specifically the two men who play side-by-side on the left portion of the line and protect the quarterback’s blind side. Bergman, who is the Stamps’ nominee for Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman, made 17 starts at left guard while Dennis played 16 games in 2019. Together, they helped the Stamps allow the second-fewest sacks in the CFL and were part of a Calgary offence that ranked in the top third in a number of categories.
Tre Roberson (cornerback): The second-year player is one of top shutdown cornerbacks in the league and is the team’s nominee for the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. Roberson made 16 starts in 2019 and ranked second in the CFL with seven interceptions. Roberson scored two touchdowns – one on an interception return and one on a fumble recovery. Roberson also had 12 knockdowns – the third-highest total in the CFL – as well as 41 tackles. He twice was honoured as a CFL player of the week and his last-minute field-goal block on Sept. 14 preserved a win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
DaShaun Amos (halfback): Amos earns all-star recognition in his first full season in the league. The East Carolina alum made 17 starts at halfback and finished tied for third in the CFL with five interceptions. He returned one of the interceptions for a touchdown during the Stamps’ Labour Day rematch victory over the Edmonton Eskimos. Amos had 42 defensive tackles, one special-teams tackle and eight knockdowns.
