Stamps' Arbuckle, Bombers' Rose set to renew friendly rivalry

Nick Arbuckle first met Winston Rose way back when they were both in junior college.

At the time, Arbuckle was playing football and attending Los Angeles Pierce College, while Rose was doing the same at their rival, Los Angeles Valley.

They would get even better acquainted later, when Arbuckle was the quarterback at Georgia State and Rose was a DB at New Mexico State – two rivals in the Sun Belt Conference.

Now, they’re set to square off as rivals yet again on Thursday night (6 p.m., TSN, 770 CHQR) when Arbuckle’s Calgary Stampeders take on Rose’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“Every time I play I feel competitive, but this one? I know Nick Arbuckle, so this one’s for the books,” Rose said.

The two have come into their own this season, with Rose currently tied – with the Stampeders’ Tre Roberson – for the league lead in interceptions, with five, and Arbuckle leading the Stamps to four wins in five games while Bo Levi Mitchell has been injured.

And after training together this off-season, neither guy is even trying to pretend Thursday’s game doesn’t feel a little extra meaningful.

“I’m very aware that there is no way that I throw an interception to Winston,” Arbuckle said. “Me and him trained together everyday throughout the off-season and got together throwing one-on-ones every week since December, so I know if anything happens I’ll never hear the end of it.”
