Explosive returner Dedmon on a roll with Eskimos on deck
The Edmonton Eskimos coverage units on special teams are looking to avoid becoming dead men walking this week when they face Ottawa Redblacks returner DeVonte Dedmon.
His punt-return touchdown in a 30-27 overtime victory over the Montreal Alouettes fed the highlight reel of ESPN’s Sports Centre. And it wasn’t his only visit to the end zone last week either, having also added a 111-yard kickoff return.
And now, after being named a Canadian Football League player of the week Tuesday, the red-hot Redblacks return man is coming up against an Eskimos coverage crew that allowed a 103-yard kickoff return touchdown to CFL combined-yards leader Terry Williams in a 24-18 loss to the Calgary Stampeders.
But Eskimos special teams co-ordinator A.J. Gass isn’t planning to step foot on the Green Mile.
“Every week is a challenge. There are some really talented guys up here returning,” he said. “The game lends itself to big plays in the return game, so I think our guys enjoy that. They were fired up to go into Calgary and face a returner like Williams and they’re equally excited to face Dedmon this week.
“Each and every week, we’re going to face a guy who’s got skill and ability and we’re going to rise to the occasion.”
