QB Bennett among final Bombers cuts
Veteran backup quarterback and special-teamer Bryan Bennett was among the casualties as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers made their final cuts on Saturday.
The Bombers went with 23-year-old Sean McGuire as their third-string quarterback instead, obviously seeing more upside in him as a future quarterback than the 27-year-old Bennett.
Other notable cuts include defensive lineman Brandin Bryant, who started nine games last season, and receivers Corey Washington and Rashaun Simonise.
Washington started three games, caught six passes and one touchdown in 2018, while Simonise, a 6-foot-4 target from Vancouver, never did pan out after the Bombers chose him 12th overall in last year’s CFL draft.
Defensive back Tyneil Cooper (five games last year) was also sent packing, as was former U of M Bisons defensive lineman Tariq Lachance, a sixth-round pick this year.
Newcomers avoiding the axe include receiver/kick returner Lucky Whitehead, receivers Kenny Lawler and Rasheed Bailey, as well as offensive lineman Drew Desjarlais and Winnipeg-born running back Brady Oliveira, this year’s first- and second-round picks, respectively
Among those who’ve accepted spots on the practice roster are receiver Kenny Walker and 2019 draft picks Asotui Eli (O-line) and Connor Griffiths (D-line).
The Bombers also announced the retirement of import O-lineman Manase Foketi, a three-year veteran who started five games last season.
Injury lists will be released in the days leading to next week’s season-opener in B.C.
