Tyler Varga scores first NFL touchdown for Colts
Congratulations go out from CFLpass to Kitchener citizen/Yale graduate Tyler Varga this morning, as last night the undrafted fullback notched his first NFL touchdown – albeit in a preseason game. Varga’s one-yard plunge was one of his six carries for the Indianapolis Colts in Saturday night’s 24-14 win over the St. Louis Rams.
Varga has reportedly impressed enough this preseason, but has some serious competition within the Colts’ roster. Kevin Bowen of the team’s official website last week opined that “Varga has to hope the Colts keep four running backs and if that happens, he likely will be fighting with Vick Ballard (health pending) and Zurlon Tipton for that spot. That’s a tall order. Varga obviously has practice squad eligibility, so maybe that’s the more likely route for him in 2015.”
Indeed, a spot on the practice squad seems destined at this point in the NFL preseason, although he has seen playing time in all three of the Colts’ preseason games thus far…
Varga was projected as a top-five prospect going into the 2015 CFL Draft but, due to his prospects in the NFL, was instead taken at no. 19 overall by the Calgary Stampeders. On the NFL side, Varga was not called on draft day but signed a contract with the Colts shortly thereafter.
First cuts, which will reduce 90-man rosters down to 75, are scheduled for Tuesday. Varga should certainly survive this wave of the elimination process.
