Hey, it’s Franklin: Despite lung contusion, rookie to start for Eskimos
Despite being diagnosed with a lung contusion (!), James Franklin has been tapped by Edmonton Eskimos head coach Chris Jones to start at quarterback in this Friday’s game against the Toronto Argonauts.
Members of the Eskimo Empire will just say that it’s about time Franklin gets a shot at starting games, especially after a disastrous 49-20 home loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Matt Nichols just hasn’t been able to get it done for the Esks: He has the worst QB rating in the CFL and has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns. In his sixth CFL season, I think Matt Nichols has been given ample time to show what he’s got.
Even though James Franklin has entered many games in “garbage time”, the rookie has impressed fans in Edmonton. Twitter and call-in shows have been littered with cries to “Free James Franklin”. His five touchdowns to one interception looks a whole lot better than Matt Nichols’ ratio, and Franklin has also been making things happen on the ground with 83 yards rushing on 10 carries.
Now the only mission is to NOT get this song stuck in your head before Friday’s game against Toronto.
Franklin joins a growing list of rookie quarterbacks impressing this season, which includes Trevor Harris, Brett Smith, Robert Marve (to an extent) and Rakeem Cato. Let’s see what you can do, young man!
