Michael Sam Leaves Alouettes Training Camp…For Now [UPDATED]

It was just three weeks ago that Michael Sam signed a historical deal with the Montreal Alouettes and the hype surrounding the former SEC Defensive Player of the Year at that time was immense, but it sure seems like things have changed.

Michael Sam has left training camp…for now.

It remains to be seen whether this is a temporary move or if Sam is gone for good, but this isn’t exactly a rare occurrence in Canada. American players come up every year thinking that the CFL will be a cakewalk. In fact, it *just* happened last week when Blake Sims was released by the Argos.

The compete level in Canada is very high and sometimes the different rules and nuances of the Canadian Football League are just too much for American players to overcome in a short amount of time; however, it seemed like Sam was coming along nicely.

It is possible Sam decided the CFL wasn’t right for him or the Alouettes decided Sam wasn’t right for the CFL. Either way, this may have been brewing all week.

To be fair to Sam, he was reported to be suffering from a migraine headache on Thursday and was said to be feeling ill on Friday, as he didn’t participate in the team’s walkthrough.

CFLpass is reluctant to speculate too much on the situation but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if we don’t see Michael Sam in the Great White North again.

UPDATE: The Montreal Alouettes have released a statement regarding Sam which apparently leaves the door open for his return:

The Montreal Alouettes organization would like to clarify the situation surrounding international defensive end Michael Sam. Friday morning, Michael asked the team for special permission to leave training camp and return home for personal reasons.

Out of respect for Michael Sam, the nature of this decision will remain confidential.

The Montreal Alouettes fully respect Michael Sam’s decision and we rally around him to offer all the support needed. The team has left the door open and Michael is welcome to come back whenever he feels ready.

The organization will have no further comment on this matter at this time.
