Homer Simpson: Closet CFL Fanatic

This one will probably get a replay ‘round about May 12, but since my 9½-year-old daughter has just recently discovered this wacky television show called “The Simpsons” and this brief blip reentered my consciousness, I figured it’s worth a post here on CFLpass.

In season three, episode three (“When Flanders Failed”) of the ridiculously long-running program, we find the home-alone Homer enthralled with (presumably) the 1991 CFL Draft. Naturally, like an episode from the strongest Simpsons seasons, you’ll surely have forgotten the origin point of the bit by the time the clip ends…

Don’t be fooled by the outward lack of enthusiasm on Homer’s part. After all, to be watching the 15th round of the CFL Draft on TV in the pre-online streaming days of 1991 certainly required some serious devotion – at least a satellite worth a small fortune.

Three more years with Calgary Stampeders for Juwan Simpson

Simpson, eh? Not exactly one of the drones in Sector 7-G, perennial all-star and defensive team captain Juwan Simpson has received a three-year extension from the defending champion Calgary Stampeders in what may ultimately go down as one of this CFL preseason’s best contract deals.

Kudos to Calgary management to retaining the 30-year-old lifetime Stampeder in what appears to be a mutually beneficial relationship thus far. All seven seasons of his CFL career has Simpson been with the Pedes as part of a defensive nucleus that has remained alongside him.

BC Lions sleep through free agency; 2015 is all on Tedford, Lulay

CFLpass realizes that we’re still four months out from the regular season, but it’s not too early to express some real concern for the BC Lions’ hopes in 2015 – and quite possibly the end of the team’s 18-year playoff run. With the free agency season grinding to a close, Lions management has spent much of ’15 in a slumber worthy of the team mascot.

Ottawa Redblacks host odd sports fan tradition

Ottawa Redblacks host odd sports fan tradition

What if I told you that there’s a city in Canada that anticipated the return of professional football after a nine-year absence so that the fans could yell at one another? That an expansion team was born with a rivalry in place? That even local politicos have no fear of alienating half a fanbase on game day?

Apologies for the derivative opener, but the CFL.ca production “Northside Southside” runs like an excellent “30 for 30” short in its encapsulation of one of the world’s strangest sports fan rituals. As the name implies, the 13½-minute short features Ottawa’s utterly unique in-stadium rivalry which pits the posher and more reserved fans sitting in the northern area of seats against the raucous southsiders.
Repeat after them: “Northside sucks! Northside sucks!” (image courtesy CFL.ca)

In advance of the CFL Draft, a pair of projected top five overall picks are hoping to be no-shows in Toronto. Among the attendees at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis are UNLV offensive tackle Brett Boyko and Yale RB Tyler Varga.

CFL regular season kickoff: Ottawa Redblacks at Montreal Alouettes

The league released the 2015 CFL schedule this morning; check it out at the official site at the previous link. As a teaser, the week one slate is posted below.

CFL 2015 week one schedule

The schedule was “unlocked” and thus made available to the online public via a popularity contest fan poll located elsewhere on the site. Results from the single polling query, i.e. “Tell us who you think will win the 103rd Grey Cup”, have the Edmonton Eskimos installed as favorites. In what appears to be a three-way tie, the Toronto Argonauts, BC Lions and Ottawa Redblacks (!) are right at the Eskis’ heels.

So … June 25, 7:30 EST…? That’s only 130 days, 3 hours, 33 minutes away as of this writing. Tempus fugit.
